Area Example

Find the area of the shaded shape.   All measurements are in cm

Area of shaded portion

Area of shaded portion

Solution:

Area of the rectangle = 11 cm x 10 cm = 110 cm^2

Area of half the rectangle = {{110} \over 2}cm^2 =55cm^2

Area of unshaded triangle = {1 \over 2}b \times h={1 \over 2}10 \times 4cm^2 =20cm^2

Area of shaded portion =

Area of half the rectangle - Area of unshaded triangle = 55 - 20 = 35cm^2

Estimate 2.97 x 46

2.97 x 46  \approx 3 x 50 = 150

Round to the nearest 1000

Round 14569 to the nearest 1000

Ans:

The thousandth unit is 4, the hundredth unit is 5 so 4 will be rounded up.   Therefore 14569 rounded to the nearest 1000 is 15000.

Increase a decimal

Increase 4.51 by (1/10)th

1/10 = 0.1

So 4.51 + 0.10 = 4.61

Find a square root by factorising (Example 1)

Use factorising to find this √324

324 = 2 x 162

162 = 2 x 81

81 = 9 x 9

So √324 = 2 x 2 x 9 x 9

Group into pairs: 324 = 2 x 9 x 2 x 9 = 18 x 18 = 182

So √324 = 18
